Professional vs SubProfessional Level: What's the difference?

I am a college graduate/undergraduate, what level of exam should I take?

The level of exam you should take depends on what type of eligibility you wish to acquire and there is no education requirement to take the CS Exam. As long as you are 18 years old at the time of application, you can take either the Professional or Sub-professional exam.

PROFESSIONAL LEVEL

The civil service eligibility resulting from passing the Career Service Examination - Pen and Paper Test  (CSE-PPT) Professional Level shall be called Career Service Professional Eligibility.

It is a second level eligibility appropriate for both first level (clerical) and second level (technical) positions in the government that do not involve practice of profession and are not covered by special/other laws.

Scope of Examination:
In English and Filipino: vocabulary, grammar and correct usage, paragraph organization, reading comprehension, analogy, logic, numerical reasoning and general information items on: Philippine Constitution; Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials and Employees (R. A. 6713); Peace and Human Rights Issues and Concepts; and Environment Management and Protection.
No. of Items: 170
Time Limit: 3 hours, 10 minutes
Test Proper: 8:00 a.m. to 11:10 a.m.
Time Required for Pre and Post Examination Activities/Documentation: Approximately one hour before and one hour after the test proper.

SUBPROFESSIONAL LEVEL

The civil service eligibility resulting from passing the Career Service Examination - Pen and Paper Test  (CSE-PPT) Subprofessional Level shall be called Career Service Subprofessional Eligibility.

It is a first level eligibility appropriate only for first level (clerical) positions in the government that do not involve practice of profession and are not covered by special/other laws.

Scope of Examination:
In English and Filipino: vocabulary, grammar and correct usage, paragraph organization, reading comprehension, spelling, clerical operations, numerical reasoning and general information items on: Philippine Constitution; Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials and Employees (R. A. 6713); Peace and Human Rights Issues and Concepts; and Environment Management and Protection.
No. of Items: 165
Time Limit: 2 hours, 40 minutes
Test Proper: 8:00 a.m. to 10:40 a.m.
Time Required for Pre and Post Examination Activities/Documentation: Approximately one hour before and one hour after the test proper.

What do you mean by first level and second level positions?

The first level includes clerical, trades, crafts, and custodial service positions which involve non-professional or sub-professional work in a non-supervisory or supervisory capacity requiring less than four years of collegiate studies.

Example:

  • Administrative Assistant I to VI
  • Administrative Services Assistant I to II
  • Cash Clerk I to IV
  • Food Drug Inspector
  • HR Management Assistant I to II

The second level includes professional, technical, and scientific positions which involve professional, technical, or scientific work in a non-supervisory or supervisory capacity requiring at least four years of college work up to Division Chief level.

Example:

  • Administrative Officer I to V
  • Services Officer I to VI
  • Cashier A to D
  • Cashier I to VI

Might want to add: The Foreign Service Officer (FSO) exam seems to be a valid substitute, or encompasses already CSE-PPT/profesional eligbility

[QUOTE SOURCE="https://www.csc.gov.ph/csc-bares-2023-civil-service-exam-calendar-application-for-foreign-service-officer-exam-begins-oct-13"]
As an eligibility examination, passers of the CSE-FSO shall be conferred the Career FSO Eligibility. This eligibility is appropriate to first level (clerical) and second level (technical) positions in the government which do not involve practice of profession and are not covered by bar, board, and other laws.
